the third release for la freund recordings comes from amsterdam resident beraber. consisting of four strong and diverse tracks and a jazzy, piano-heavy remix by chicago house legend vincent floyd, sun ritual works just as well in the club as it does at home. after working on hiphop and downtempo electronica under different aliases, this ep sees baris akardere venturing into up-tempo territories, marking the debut of his beraber moniker. all tracks were written and produced during the last two years, combining digital instruments like the korg m1 and yamaha dx7 with analog gear like the roland juno-6 and korg ms-10. kicking things off on the a-side is title track sun ritual, a positive and warm tune with lush chords and arpeggiated synths. after a surprising outro, it gets the remix treatment by deep house pioneer vincent floyd, who adds multiple layers to it and delivers a stunning, dreamy eight-minute take on the original. the flipside opens with ugly, a soulful club workout with a deep bassline, rolling drums with crisp hi-hats and a hypnotic melody. next up is introspect, a serious electro-tinged cut with heavy juno chords building up tension as the track evolves. rounding it up nicely, forest rain treats us to an intimate broken-beat affair laced with rhodes chords and field recordings from bali.

legendary los hermanos member santiago salazar�s album �aspirations for young xol� is given a vinyl release courtesy of rekids. a heartfelt dedication to his son isaias, �aspirations for young xol� takes us through the life of a pillar in the electronic music community - santiago salazar. from his formative years spent in california to his connection with detroit and the passing of a childhood friend, the long-player�s tracks signpost the musician�s significant experiences, both positive and negative. this meaningful body of work was released digitally on pastel voids and now rekids release the album on wax. �saturated fear� sets a deep tone for the lp, flanging melodies and echoing claps float through the composition before the album�s title track �aspirations for young xol� offers haunting arpeggios with occasional acidic overtones which are cleverly offset by beautifully designed lead synth transitions. �bloodlines� follows a similar musical vein with delayed bass riffs that are suspended above shimmering hihats and a weighted kick. santiago provides three beatless pieces throughout, which digress into more emotional territory whilst offering brief respite from his heavier drum work. �xol�s pain� combines orchestral strings and swelling synthesisers which build tension with a subtly complex, evolving motif. both �dark matter� and �ode to stinson� use arresting atmospheres, warped arpeggios and ethereal pads which lull the listener into a retrospective mood. an intensity builds in the later tracks, a gritty but powerful low end provides a solid foundation in �orange blossom thump�, eventually making way for a hectic and elastic lead synth before �pachuco dub� displays drones that build a dissonant pressure in which the complex tom rhythms and rolling hi hats can grow. �sarah rivera� hypnotises with its delectable chord progressions and complimentary melodies which seem to float above a rigid drum composition to close the album with style

kalita are busy adding more weight to their on-point reissue catalogue with this excellent single from caribbean funksters iwabo. reggae down does indeed feature a skank of sorts and all manner of sunkissed vibes, but there s a greater emphasis on laid back funk than you would find in typical jamaican output. smile on your face is a more light hearted track that equally draws on a variety of reference points to impart its infectious positive message. iwabo may have been a secret weapon of serious diggers for years, but now it s time for the wider record buying public to get in on the groove.

breaking his silence after twenty years, sebastian snoeck a.k.a sebastian s. will be the second member of belgian collective �bwp experiments� to release on the basic moves imprint. he has handed over two previously unpublished tracks made under the moniker caustic 14. after listening to �personal space invader� in 1997, carl craig asked sebastian s. to produce new material for his own label, planet e. �message in a box� and �rising star� were therefore made as a response to this request. however, due to a political transatlantic rift the tracks never saw the light of day and have since been stored on dat tapes, hidden away from the general public�s ears. if i had to describe sebastian�s output, i�d say it is most importantly energetic, positive, and groovy. it bears the mark of a certain nostalgia, shying away from the blind celebration of both futurism and experimentation in order to reach intemporality. this attempt to exist outside of time gives his productions a certain character and in my opinion his music has come to embody something i like to call �space opera techno�. sebastian s has succeeded where many before him have failed: by avoiding copycat tactics and simplified approaches to production he managed to create a singular identity. the tracks are recognisable after the first few seconds � and that�s what makes his work so unique!

professor rhythm is the production moniker of south african music man thami mdluli. throughout the 1980�s, mdluli was member of chart-topping groups taboo and cjb, playing bubblegum pop to stadiums. mdluli became an in-demand producer for influential artists (like sox and sensations, among many others) and in-house producer for important record companies like eric frisch and tusk. during the early �80s, mdluli projects usually featured an instrumental dance track. these hot instrumentals became rather popular. fans demanded to hear more of these backing tracks without vocals, he says, so mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985 as professor rhythm. he got the name before the recordings began, from fans, and positive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to invest himself in a full-on solo project. it was the era just before the end of apartheid and house music hadn�t taken over yet. there wasn�t instrumental electronic music yet in south africa. as the �80s came to a close, that was about to change.

forgot 001 is the debut release from london based record label forgot. the compilation is comprised of four tracks by four different artists: harry orso, aka ratomagoson, was last year picked up by gilles peterson�s future bubblers project and has gone on to drop a succession of well received releases on labels such as twosixtysix, polyop and tru thoughts. forgot residents hoffy and joe s both come from beat-making backgrounds while phillip russel aka pila boasts an impressive catalog of material online. since its release campaign launched earlier this year, the forgot 001 compilation has received a wealth of positive feedback from a number of revered and respected djs such as dom servini, adam scrimshire and david hanke aka renegades of jazz. the release gained considerable airplay during the summer: dom servini on soho radio, risha on radar radio, selassie tbc & amy frenchum on worldwide fm, toshio maatsura on tokyo moon and adam scrimshire on balamii radio.

this june session victim returned to delusions of grandeur imprint with their third studio album. listen to your heart is the result of a year of cross-continental scripting, started in their hamburg studio and wrapped up stateside in san francisco�s room g studios where the duo had worked on their 2014 lp see you when you get there. here we present the third of three lp samplers containing four tracks each, cut nice and loud for the vinyl crew.
we kick things off with almost midnight, another uplifting summer jam loaded with trademark session victim energy and positive vibrations. next up we have castle for sale which drops the bpm�s for a dub influenced, spaced out jam session sounding like king tubby and nightmares on wax getting stuck in the proverbial lift with a large bong for company.
flipping over we have a head over heels, which goes heavy on the lush orchestral strings and a brilliant bouncing moog bassline bringing a deft touch. finally we�re treated to thermal explorer, which incorporates some wonderful larry heard-esque keyboards for a perfect wind-down track to close the release.

an-2 and samos have turned the clock back to finish off a couple of sessions theyd recorded together years back. maxim samos is our keen friend and sophisticated guitar player from minsk, belarus that we know for years. his first appearance on theomatic was back in 2008 with space-rock tune alpha storm, which received lots of positive feedback and found its way to the prins thomas live at robert johnson compilation. as well as guitars, maxim can play almost any string instrument and, on one of his erstwhile trips to istanbul, he dropped by a music store, picked up a saz and immediately set it alight, blowing away the entire staff. after scoring a big discount, he came out, clutching it in his hands. an-2 commented on samos playing on the saz during one of his first visits to minsk, and immediately suggested cutting a track together something that took 10 years, but the wait�s been worth it. what weve got is surreal halal-acid-folk-disco affair, perfect for whirling dervishes or dancing the dhikr. the storys continued on the b-side, where were treated to a tale of trips in a gti, before finishing with a nordic saga about cold fronts coming at us from behind the polar circle.

this 4-track ep combines ambient and techno elements to create immersive landscapes, which later on transform into the techno grooves. the concept of this release, �unknown frequency�, defines the limited nature of human perception, which is unable to experience the full universe of the sound.
on the a-side lies the main concept track as well as its landscape/ambient version. both works express the positive tension and harmonious excitement of the discoveries to come. on the b-side, first track - �traces� continues the search of the unknown. this time, darker regions of mind are explored by the sinister grooves and minimalistic atmospheres. final track �looking for the exit� is supposed to give an answer and release the tension of the ep, but after experiencing the unknown, nothing is the same anymore.

tenderness - a short-lived disco project helmed by james purdie and skip mahoney only released one 45 and one 12� single during their brief existence. known for their work with chuck brown & the soul searchers & frank hooker & positive people and many more, this duo were undoubtedly a highly talented producer, songwriter and keyboardist combination. originally released on rca in 1978 keep on trying was an underground club hit. the record still packs an immense punch today, it�s a mixture of tough streetwise drums and percussion and swooping dramatic strings and brass will surely hit the spot for disco aficionados. the kind of record you can imagine causing all out pandemonium at the garage while the scents of amyl and sweat fill your nostrils. the kind of record that would make everyone on the raised stages and podiums at the powerhouse whoop and holler in collective joy as frankie stylishly segues it into a punishing percussion break-down. yep. it�s that kind of disco record, so rare and so coveted that even the infamous dj harvey put it over his knee and gave it a good editing way back when. there�s been a shedload of poor imitations knocking around, dodgy euro bootlegs etc, but this 2017 repress is from the master tapes (yes, we can prove it) and is fully, 100% legit in every way. keep on trying - now available again, released in conjunction with rca. back on the streets. same as it ever was! essential disco heat here, buy on sight!

twr72 is back with a full new story starring lucid as the lead. lucid dropped out of space on a world called planet earth. it�s luminous and vivid appearance were instantly clear. at first lucid was a bit reserved but during it�s first steps it opened up and showed some colorful emotions and hints of it�s personality. with detailed patterns of communication lucid tried to find a way through this new world. erudite, which was already for a more prolonged time on planet earth, picked up the incomprehensible code from lucid and reproduced it into a solid and clever message. erudite was keen enough to think of a way to communicate back with lucid as it noticed lucid needed help. but it needed someone else to bring the message to lucid. so erudite asked help from colloquial who could easily transcript the message back to lucid. colloquial used different types of frequencies to connect to lucid, but it wasn�t that easy. lucid already travelled further and was hard to reach. therefor colloquial tried to use heavier elements to make a more solid composition. unfortunately not only positive things arrived from space. aporia was a rather negative influence which disturbed the link between colloquial and lucid. aporia tried to force the communication by continuously changing the elements of the message. but it wasn�t all that bad, because at the end aporia brought the two important elements of the message together.
